Sales Associate Resume Sample

Below you’ll find a retail sales associate resume sample, which a sales associate sales description will usually ask you to submit when you apply for the position. But first, here are some tips to get you started:

  • Keep it to one page.
  • Overview/Objective: This part can either be a 1-2 sentence summary of yourself, or a sales associate resume objective. Personally, I find that an objective is dull and they all tend to be the same, so I suggest summarizing yourself. Tell them straight up why they want to hire you. Highlight your biggest personality and professional strengths and exactly why they should hire you.
  • Skills: Simple bullet points of what you’ve learned in past jobs, and try to cover each part of the sales associate duties. If you don’t have any experience, don’t fret. List any relevant skills you may have, and also point out that you are a quick learner and will easily pick up any necessary skills during training.
  • Employment Experience: Your job history with 1-2 tasks you did for each place of employment – or if you have any notable achievements for a job, list those instead. If you’ve never had any previous jobs, don’t worry about this section. List some extracurriculars such as community activities, volunteer work, academic achievements, or odd jobs you’ve taken. If you can, explain how these relate to the job you’re applying for and how your experience or performance in these activities will benefit your ability to perform.
  • Personal (optional): Here’s a good place to list a few points about you, so the person reading it can know a little about you as a person. It’s also where you can stand out from all the other applicants. Check out a few in the sales associate resume examples below.
  • References: You don’t have to include your actual references on the resume itself. If you’re considered for the next step in the hiring pipeline, that’s when they’ll ask you for them, if at all.

The average annual wage is $25,130. The middle 50% of workers’ earnings range from $8.72 to $13.36 an hour, with the highest 10% earning over $18.51. Please be aware that entry level positions may pay as low as $7.25 an hour, which is the federal minimum wage. However, many states have minimum wages that are higher than the federal minimum, and wages also tend to be higher in areas where employers have difficulty retaining and attracting workers. Some companies pay overtime for third shifts that take place during the evening.

Sales Associate Duties

The five categories of the retail sales associate job description are:

  • Managing inventory
  • Sales
  • Customer Service
  • Cashier
  • Administrative Duties

Managing Inventory

There are two aspects to this category of a sales associate’s responsibilities: stock and store floor. In the behind-the-scenes operation of the store, a sales associate may perform duties such as unloading trucks and keeping overflow stock organized in the back room or warehouse area. For products that will be featured on the store floor, a sales associate will be involved in tagging merchandise with tags (price tags, size tags, sales stickers, etc.). Prices often change, and sales associates are expected to complete price changes by re-tagging and/or moving merchandise. Once this is done, they will arrange the merchandise on the store floor. This means placing the products in an organized fashion on shelves, racks, counters, and sales displays.
